Thornton, Colorado, is the sixth most populated city in the state with nearly 137,000 residents spread in a 37 square mile area. It was incorporated in 1956 and was given the name Dan Thornton after the former governor of Colorado. Like other large suburbs, Thornton - stretching from 88th Avenue north to 168th Avenue, and I-25 east to Yosemite Street - has a variety of homes, ranging from older-style ranches to new builds in huge residential developments. There are also a variety of apartments and townhomes, with 25 major parks and innumerable other smaller parks throughout the community.
